Conservatory History

Conservatories grew out of the British Aristocracy’s interest in horticulture at the end of the 17th century. The first “orangeries” were constructed to protect plants during the winter months. Orangeries evolved into conservatories, and provided a year-round opportunity to germinate seeds and grow cuttings from the Mediterranean, West Indies and other warm climates. The architectural style developed very quickly and the fashionable enthusiasm for exotic gardening soon produced a  large demand among the Aristocracy. In 1704, Queen Anne commissioned a magnificent conservatory for Kensington Palace that still stands today. Following the Queen’s lead, these elaborate structures soon became a requirement for all grand houses in the United Kingdom. The Victorian period provided the most ambitious, enduring, and ornamental styles of conservatories.

It is this style that KGT Conservatories strives to bring to your home — a fully customized, sophisticated addition to your home.
